Do you use films containing volatile corrosion inhibitors (VCI) to protect metals from corrosion?
Are you wondering about the best way to store VCI packaging, such as VCI anti-rust rolls and bags, before use, to always ensure the anti-rust effect of the product?
Because VCI products are designed to diffuse their protective chemicals into the storage space, the key to maintaining their effectiveness is keeping them tightly sealed in airtight, waterproof packaging.
The five ways to preserve VCI anti-rust paper and film below are the manufacturer’s recommendations during the preservation and storage of VCI products for longer periods of use.

5 Best Ways to Preserve VCI Anti-Rust Film and Paper – Maintain Long-Lasting Anti-Rust Effectiveness
Below is a list of best practices for storing and preserving VCI rust preventive products :
Store in a cool, dry place, in its original packaging until use: Be sure to store VCI rust inhibitor products in a location with temperatures between 0°F and 85°F (-18°C and 29°C) and relative humidity below 60%. If you are not going to use the product for an extended period of time, be sure to seal it in an airtight plastic container. This will protect the VCI product from atmospheric contaminants and maintain the effectiveness of the rust inhibitor. Reseal the container after each shift or during breaks between shifts.
Protect from moisture and dust: Store the product under cover and cover it with a protective cloth to ensure it is free from dirt and dust. Once you remove the product from its original packaging, make sure to protect it from contaminants and keep it dry.
Protection from ultraviolet (UV) light and high temperatures: Exposure to ultraviolet light may cause the product to discolor, crack or decompose. High temperatures cause film sticking, aging and deterioration, which are signs that the product has been exposed to high temperatures. This may cause color change and reduce or change the properties of the product, such as loss of antistatic properties and electrostatic treatment.
Apply a first-in, first-out (FIFO) process: Retain all information, labels, or other identifiers with the product until the product is used up for traceability purposes.
Store colored rigid materials in specific shapes on clean, flat surfaces: Avoid storing on uneven surfaces such as pallets.
VCI Product Shelf Life and Storage: VCI packaging product shelf life and storage life may vary slightly by manufacturer. Typical storage life for VCI plastic packaging is 2-3 years, with a shelf life of up to five years. VCI anti-fouling paper has a limited shelf life of 1 year. You can store it for that period and be assured of protection for another year. VCI packaging products provide the best long-term protection when stored properly.
